Recognizing that carbon capture and storage (CCS) development varies from region to region, the Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum (CSLF) in 2017 implemented regional stakeholder meetings designed to accurately reflect the diverse needs in order to achieve CCS success in each geographic region. in December 2017, a summary narrative was shared with ministers from CSLF member countries at the 7th Ministerial Meeting, held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

CSLF European Regional Stakeholder Meeting

October 6, 2017, Brussels, Belgium
10:00–14:15

CO2GeoNet and the UK Carbon Capture and Storage Association (CCSA) chaired the first CSLF regional European meeting. The event aimed to collate stakeholder views on driving CCS toward large-scale deployment in Europe. The agenda (below) gives an overview of the event's aims and outcomes and a review of the current state of play of CCS in Europe.

Two panel sessions were held as part of the event.

  • Panel discussion 1: How can we accelerate deployment of CCS at scale in Europe? The first panel discussion reflected on the lessons learned from over 20 years of developing CCS in Europe, and how stakeholders can use this experience to advance CCS projects to the scale needed in the 2020s and 2030s.
  • Panel discussion 2: How can we communicate effectively to build support for CCS in Europe? The discussion further focused on the practical actions needed from government and industry to build a robust policy framework for the large-scale deployment of CCS across multiple sectors. Supporting financial instruments to enable CCS projects in Europe were also discussed. The panel examined how to effectively communicate the benefits of developing CCS in Europe to support sustainable growth across multiple sectors and industrial regions. The session considered the role of stakeholders in supporting effective engagement and opportunities for CSLF as an inter-governmental body to help to forge these relationships.
