Project Description

Located at Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada, this large-scale project has integrated capture, transportation, storage, and monitoring that will capture and store up to 1.2 million tonnes per year of carbon dioxide (CO2) from an oil sands upgrading unit. The CO2 will be transported via pipeline and stored in a deep saline aquifer in the Western Sedimentary Basin in Alberta, Canada. This is a fully integrated project, intended to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the commercial oil sands upgrading facility while developing detailed cost data for projects of this nature. This will also be a large-scale deployment of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies and methodologies, including a comprehensive measurement, monitoring, and verification program.

Recognized by the Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum (CSLF) at its Warsaw meeting in October 2010.
