This is a large-scale research project that will geologically store up to 1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) over a 3-year period. The CO2 is being captured from the fermentation process used to produce ethanol at an industrial corn processing complex in Decatur, Illinois, in the United States. After three years, the injection well will be sealed and the reservoir monitored using geophysical techniques. Monitoring, verification, and accounting efforts include tracking the CO2 in the subsurface; monitoring the performance of the reservoir seal; and continuous checking of soil, air, and groundwater both during and after injection. The project focus is on demonstration of carbon capture and storage (CCS) project development, operation, and implementation while demonstrating CCS technology and reservoir quality.
