Clemson University Advancing Power Technologies, Developing Cleaner Fuels from Coal

• Treating Scrubber Wastewater - South Carolina Institute for Energy Studies based at Clemson University in Clemson, SC, is evaluating specifically designed pilot-scale constructed wetland treatment systems for treatment of targeted constituents in flue gas desulfurization (FGD) wastewater from coal-fired power plants.  The overall objective of this project is to decrease targeted constituents (in this case, mercury, selenium, and arsenic concentrations) in FGD wastewater to achieve discharge limitations established by the National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) and Clean Water Act (CWA). DOE is funding $200,000 of this $286,000 project.
