Delaware Small Business Developing Natural Gas Storage
  • Activated Carbons for Small-Scale Natural Gas Storage - CM-Tec, Inc., Newark, DE is developing an activated carbon-based natural gas storage system. Natural gas provides a clean and environmentally-friendly fuel for electric power generation; however, the distribution network, and especially the storage system, is ill-distributed for the projected growth in natural gas used in electric power plants. Compressed natural gas and cryogenic natural gas storage methods provide some alternative means; however, safety, durability, and cost issues limit their applications in this area. Adsorbent-based natural gas storage demonstrates some merits over these methods, and has the potential to store natural gas at comparable weight and volume as a high-pressure cylinder, but at a fraction of its pressure. DOE is fully funding this $826,700 project.
