DOE National Laboratory Releases Annual Accomplishments Report

NETL Cites Research Successes that Balance Energy Supply, Economy, Environment

Washington, D.C. — The National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) has released its annual accomplishments report, highlighting breakthroughs in research and technology development to address the nation’s energy, economic, and environmental challenges.

NETL, the research arm of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy, released the report this week to showcase the national laboratory’s successes from late 2007 through 2008. The accomplishments report illustrates the success of NETL and its research partners in advancing cost-effective and environmentally sound technologies to meet the nation’s energy challenges today and into the future.

"For nearly 100 years, NETL, together with its predecessor laboratories, has conducted energy research to advance energy options," said NETL Director Carl Bauer. "The laboratory continues to develop new technologies and processes that answer each decade’s pressing energy issues and to provide our nation’s policymakers with the objective, scientific information they need to set sound energy policy. I am pleased and proud to be part of such an important endeavor and to work with exceptional colleagues, who invest themselves in addressing the energy needs of the nation and the world."

The report focuses on the results of NETL’s research and technology development. The year’s accomplishments are organized by the three overlapping issues that must be considered in pursuing effective energy solutions: environment, economy, and supply. In addition, the report describes NETL’s success in transferring new technologies to the private sector, where they can be commercialized for the benefit of the American people.
