Bilateral Agreements
U.S.-Australia Climate Action Partnership
U.S.-Australia cooperation in the area of clean coal technologies has been maintained since 2002 under the U.S.-Australia Climate Action Partnership (CAP). Subsequent to the first meeting under the CAP (in Washington, DC in November 2002), a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding was signed in 2003. Parties to this MOU are the DOE and the Australian Department of Industry, Tourism, and Resources.
Broadly, these activities involve pooling of U.S.-Australia R&D efforts in the following areas:
- Gasification and IGCC technology development
- CO2 sequestration
- Advanced combustion
- Synthetic liquid fuels
- Policy development
An additional purpose has been the use of the dialogue to facilitate bilateral trade and energy investment.
Bilateral Oil and Gas Discussions
To continue engagements with the Australians through an ongoing Bilateral Energy Dialogue, the FE Oil and Gas program held an LNG Roundtable in San Francisco on May 3, 2004 that brought together representatives of the U.S. government, Australian government, and the liquefied natural gas industry. The Roundtable focused on opportunities for suppliers and consumers of LNG to work together to ensure adequate natural gas supplies to the United States. Australia is a significant exporter of LNG and is interested in marketing LNG to the west coast of North America.
