Strategic Petroleum Reserve Operating Contractor Earns Business Excellence Award for Safety
Washington, DC - DynMcDermott Petroleum Operations Company, the management and operating contractor for the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve, is one of two recipients of the prestigious 2006 Robert W. Campbell Award.
This international award is presented annually to recognize organizations that achieve business excellence by integrating safety, health & environmental management into their business operating systems. Recipients of the Campbell Award apply a validated process for measurement of performance against internationally accepted performance indicators.
Robert W. Campbell was a pioneer in the safety movement in the United States early in the 20th century. High-profile tragedies brought attention to the crisis in workplace safety. While serving as chief of the legal staff of Illinois Steel, Mr. Campbell was selected in 1908 to serve as the first chairman of the corporate-wide safety committee, one of the first of its time. Under his guidance, the committee established the company's first formal accident prevention programs. In 1913, he was selected by his peers to serve as president of the newly formed National Safety Council, which began sponsoring the Robert W. Campbell Award in 2004.
The Strategic Petroleum Reserve is the nation's emergency crude oil stockpile. Overseen by a project management office in New Orleans, LA, the Reserve currently stores nearly 700 million barrels of crude oil in four storage sites in Texas and Louisiana. The oil is available for use at the direction of the President to counter an energy supply emergency.
DynMcDermott and the SPR operating sites are the recipients of numerous awards for management quality, environmental stewardship, and safety programs. In 2005, DynMcDermott became the first Louisiana company to receive the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award for performance excellence.
