An Introduction to Carbon Capture and Sequestration FE's Carbon Sequestration Program is helping to develop technologies to capture, purify, and store carbon dioxide in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions without adversely influencing energy use or hindering economic growth. Carbon sequestration technologies capture and store CO2 that would otherwise reside in the atmosphere for long periods of time. |

Carbon Capture and Storage, 2008 (November 2008) In 2003, the Office of Fossil Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory formed seven Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnerships to assess geologic formations suitable for carbon capture and storage, and determine the best approaches to implement carbon sequestration in each region. This video describes the work of these partnerships. |

Geologic Carbon Sequestration: A Path Toward Zero Emission Energy from Coal Carbon sequestration, the idea of capturing carbon dioxide before it is emitted to the atmosphere and storing it in underground rock formations or otherwise sequestering it, has progressed steadily over the past 10 years. It is now poised to become a key technology option for greenhouse gas emissions abatement.

Gasification - A Cornerstone Technology The gasification process converts carbon-based materials such as coal into synthesis gas (syngas) that can be used to produce clean electrical energy, transportation fuels, and chemicals efficiently and cost-effectively. Gasification is a cornerstone technology of 21st century zero emissions powerplants. |

The CO2 Story - Basin Electric Dakota Gas (part of Basin Electric) provides CO2 to the largest carbon sequestration project in the world. Each day Dakota Gas ships approximately 152 MMSCF or 8,000 metric tons of CO2 to Canada. Approximately 13 million metric tons of CO2 has been sequestered since the project began in October 2000. The CO2 is expected to be permanently sequestered in the oil reservoir, which is monitored by the International Energy Agency (IEA) Weyburn CO2 Monitoring and Storage Project. |

Carbon Capture and Storage at the Mountaineer Power Plants - American Electric Power (click on "Play Video" in upper right hand side of page) The video highlights AEP's efforts to accelerate and deploy carbon capture and storage technology at their Mountaineer Power Plant. This project is being funded, in part, through DOE's Carbon Sequestration R&D program and the Clean Coal Power Initiative.

Hydrogen Energy California Project The video shows Hydrogen Energy's proposed new hydrogen-powered electricity generating facility slated for Kern County, California that would capture and store most of its carbon related emissions. This facility will be similar to the cleanest natural gas power plants. Instead of using natural gas to run its turbine electrical generators, this plant will use hydrogen. The result will be local power generation in a local area with growing power demands - enough power for over 150,000 homes - along with 90% reduction in the emission of carbon dioxide, the most common greenhouse gas. CO2 emissions will be captured and stored deep underground, preventing release into the atmosphere.
This project is being funded, in part, through DOE's Clean Coal Power Initiative.
